The Boston Red Sox have started the season 2-4, and some of their star players have come out the gates struggling. Rafael Devers and Trevor Story are two of the team's highest-paid players, but both combined to go 1-for-27 in the opening series against the Texas Rangers.
Although both players showed signs of life against the Baltimore Orioles, Story may have to prove himself more than Devers. Story signed a six-year, $140 million contract in 2022, but has struggled to stay in the lineup since then. Injuries have kept him off the field in his Red Sox tenure, and the team could be willing to move on from him soon. FanSided's Devon Platana predicted that Story has played his final opening day for the Red Sox.
"After making $22.5 million this season, Story's salary will rise to $25 million in the next two seasons before the Red Sox must decide on his 2028 team option," wrote Platana. "Although he'd be worth the price if he was performing as his prime self, that isn't the case as long as his offensive and health-related struggles persist. Much like Devers, don't be surprised if Story shipped out of town if he can't turn things around." Story has a .232/.296/.340 slash line since signing with the Red Sox.
His dip in production, paired with his salary, could force the team to find a trade partner for him. Moving Story would also allow the Red Sox to bring up one of their young prospects to play in the infield.
Kristian Campbell is capable of playing shortstop, but the team also has Marcelo Mayer in Triple-A. Mayer is the team's No.3 prospect and the No.11 prospect on MLB Pipeline's Top 100.
