Making the decision nearly one year ago to attend Cheshire Academy to compete in prep school football was one that Keegan Croucher did not take lightly.
But the standout quarterback thought the move would prove beneficial to his long-term aspirations of landing a Division I scholarship after starring as a freshman at Fonda-Fultonville, where he played three varsity sports. Over the weekend, Croucher continued to experience the positives of his decision, which has helped fuel interest from ACC, Big Ten and SEC college programs.
Croucher, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound sophomore, just made an unofficial visit to the University of Nebraska. He also received a scholarship offer from coach Matt Rhule. The latest offer elevated Croucher's list to eight, as he previously received D-I offers from Indiana, Syracuse, UMass, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Michigan and Michigan State.
"It is definitely incredible. This is not where I thought I would be. We are very grateful for this," Croucher said. "I can't thank my parents, my family, my coaches and God enough for the situation that I am in."
Croucher decided to leave for Connecticut's Cheshire Academy last April. As a freshman, Croucher's varsity football debut in 2023 saw him lead Fonda-Fultonville to the 2023 Class C state title game in Syracuse. Named the Times Union's small-school Offensive Player of the Year, Croucher threw for 2,934 yards and 31 touchdowns. He completed 38 of 53 passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns in a 46-26 title game loss against Waverly.
During the fall, Croucher helped Cheshire Academy finish 5-4. He completed 145 of 218 passes for 2,052 yards and 20 touchdowns in the Cats' Air Raid offense. His play during the season and at showcase events elevated Croucher into the top-10 rankings of quarterbacks in the nation for the class of 2027.

"This is the best decision I ever could have made going to this prep school and playing this level of football," Croucher said. "It really made me stand out; not just with the competition level, but surrounding myself with all those athletes just made me so much better."

Croucher and his family have spread out a series of unofficial visits. The sophomore is taking it all in and taking his time. He went on visits to Michigan, Syracuse and Penn State during the fall. He recently followed up with another visit to Michigan before spending this past weekend at Nebraska.
"I am going to Notre Dame this week and Minnesota the following week," Croucher said. "Then, I will go to Texas or Ole Miss, and finish out with Indiana."
The first school to offer was Indiana when Croucher was still a freshman. He has a huge showcase event coming up May 12 where over 100 colleges will be in attendance to look at various prospects from the New England prep schools. Croucher also will taking part in Elite 11 competition for quarterbacks.
As he continues to look at schools and enhance his skills before playing his junior season at Cheshire Academy, Croucher said he might make a college choice during the summer.
"I love been lucky to have mentors to help me through this process. My parents have been great," Croucher said. "I am only going to go through this process once. I have enjoyed it. It is a lot, but, right now, I am having fun with it. ... It is an incredible journey and it is just getting started."
