Coventry City news from CoventryLive as Frank Lampard looks forward to having fierce competition in his squad for the first time since taking charge of the Sky Blues.
The return of key players has hopefully come just at the right time for Coventry City who have managed to hit form and gather momentum without them.
The return of Ben Sheaf just for a few minutes at the end against Preston North End was a welcome sight and this weekend could see joint leading scorer Haji Wright return to the matchday mix for the first time in over three months when the Sky Blues travel to Oxford United.
Just as with the return of Ephron Mason-Clark in recent weeks it will take a few games for them to get back up to speed, with both most likely eased back into the team. But, all being well, Frank Lampard will have a fully fit and firing squad from which to draw upon for the final push for a place in the play-offs.
Yes, the squad’s strong with a good competitive edge to it now because we have got through that patch without big players like Ben, Ephron and Haji,” said the head coach, who is mindful of the fact that the return of those players means others need to step up or miss out.
“But now they are coming back and it’s important that the group understands that. A competitive squad is a good thing and puts people under good pressure because we want to get better. And we’ll feel that in the squad now and it’s about making sure we handle that in a really good way, each individual in the squad.
“Good competition is a great thing so we will have a really nice working week now, working towards Oxford. There will be a bit of work to get those players fitter and a bit stronger.”
The weekend saw Raphael Borges Rodrigues miss out on the teamsheet and the return of Wright and injured Victor Torp – both of whom could be available this weekend – means that players will be fighting to get on the bench, let alone into the starting line-up.
