Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed that Swindon Town owner Clem Morfuni is reportedly seeking £14 million to sell the club. Morfuni, who took over in 2021, has overseen a period of decline for Swindon Town both on and off the pitch. The club has experienced three successive seasons of worsening league finishes under his leadership, leading to growing frustration among supporters.

Off-field troubles have also plagued the club during Morfuni’s tenure. Last season, Swindon Town received two charges from the English Football League (EFL) and struggled with consistent late payments to emergency services. These issues have contributed to a noticeable decline in fan engagement. The club’s average attendance this season has dropped to 6,933, a significant fall from the 9,449 recorded in the 2021/22 season.

In response to the ongoing problems, a group of concerned fans has formed The Spirit of ’69, a fan action group calling for greater transparency and the sale of the club. One of the group’s co-founders, Dan Hunt, recently appeared on Kieran Maguire’s “Price of Football” podcast to discuss the club's current state and future. Hunt and other members of the group are urging Morfuni to publicly list the club for sale, hoping new ownership could rejuvenate Swindon Town.

Maguire shared his insights on the podcast, suggesting that Swindon Town could indeed be an attractive purchase for the right buyer. He argued that fresh leadership could spark renewed interest and professionalism at the club. However, Maguire emphasized that the £14 million asking price may be unrealistic, especially given the club’s current financial condition and on-field performance.

He explained that Morfuni is likely trying to recover the money he has invested in the club, which may be influencing the steep valuation. Maguire speculated that Morfuni might have external debts related to his investment in Swindon, which could further complicate the situation. As a result, the owner is caught between wanting to sell and being able to do so at a realistic price that reflects the club’s true market value.

Despite the uncertainty, Morfuni has reiterated his willingness to sell Swindon Town under the right circumstances. In an interview with The Adver last November, he stated that he would consider offers from buyers who he believes are capable of running the club more effectively. However, until a more feasible asking price is established, the future of Swindon Town’s ownership remains uncertain.
