There was a time when Jalen Milroe was a lock-in for the first round.
After taking down the Georgia Bulldogs in what was one of the better games of his career, many thought he had finally arrived.
But some bumps in the road both during the season and in the pre-draft process seemed to have dropped his stock.
For those unaware, the NFL only invites a specific number of prospects to attend the draft in person. Why? Having prospects sit in a green room while they wait to hear their names called, only for it to never happen, or at least not on night one, isn’t a great look for anyone.
The NFL doesn’t see it that way, however…
“‘Hey, Cleveland, the Giants, whichever of you guys don’t take quarterbacks at the top, you wanna come back in and still get one? We’re open for business and we’ll go ahead and get some of those picks in that second-round range that we don’t currently possess,” said Daniel Jeremiah when discussing Pittsburgh potent tially trading their 21st overall pick.
And of course there is Pittsburgh to consider. Colin Cowherd recently went out on a limb, going as far as to say that you can stamp Milroe in round one, and to the Pittsburgh Steelers, nonetheless…
“I talked to an NFL exec last night, very well-connected, and this is a keep your head on a swivel, Aaron Rodgers. I’m told the Steelers really like Jalen Milroe, 21st pick, first round. So if Aaron signs with Pittsburgh, it’s going to become Kirk Cousins,” Cowherd said on FS1’s “The Herd.” “They’re taking a quarterback. If the 21st pick, Milroe’s not taken, Pittsburgh is leaning now and taking him.”
So there is certainly smoke on Milroe going in round one. And while this time of year tends to produce a lot of hearsay and rumors, the NFL is proving there might be fire behind the smoke that is Milroe’s stock.
So, for the NFL to extend the invitation and for Milroe to accept, both parties know something. Two teams who have been linked to Milroe throughout the process are AFC North foes via the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers.
For Cleveland, I’m pretty sure we can rule out the selection of Milroe at second overall. But what can’t be ruled out is trading back into the first round to find their signal caller, an idea that has started to pick up some steam…
