Frank Lampard says Coventry City striker Justin Obikwu is a “really interesting” prospect and is looking forward to getting a closer look at the loan player come the summer. The 21-year-old Sky Blues development star is currently with League Two Grimsby Town having also spent the second half of last season at Blundell Park too. So far this term, he has scored seven goals in 18 appearances for the Mariners, three of which have come in his last three games. However, a car accident has temporarily halted his progress, forcing him to miss last weekend’s 2-1 home win over Fleetwood Town. Asked if Obikwu was hurt in the crash, Lampard said: “Yeah, I think he was. I don’t know the exact details. I don’t want to go too deep into it but the good news is that I think he’s back in contention this weekend – hurt and shook up a bit I think, as you would be.” Coventry City loan striker Justin Obikwu celebrates scoring for Grimsby Town against Accrington Stanley As for whether he’s been keeping track of the lad’s progress, the City boss added: “Yeah, for sure. I know Justin, he came back to us when he had his injury recently, trained with us with a little rehab for a month or something, and he’s a nice young lad, really good at the training ground. He is very polite and conversational, so that was nice to sort of see him and work with him. And as a player, yeah, I have got a good understanding of him.” He added: “I have watched a couple of his games from pre-season when he played. He has a great profile as a striker and he’s scoring goals in that league. So it’s a really interesting one for us to watch and when he’s back with us in pre-season he’ll be interesting for us and for the future. “At the minute he’s had his accident, which is fortunately not a bad injury for him. He’s come through that and I think he’s ready maybe this weekend or next to play, but we will absolutely keep an eye on him and it’s good to see him scoring regularly.”
