Adkins left Prenton Park late last night by mutual agreement just 15 months after taking charge following a winless run of ten League Two matches which culminated in the 1-0 home defeat to Accrington Stanley.
Crosby joined Tranmere in December last year for a "short-term period as a coach" and now finds himself in charge for Saturday's game against Port Vale who he managed for just under two years until his sacking in February 2024.
The 51-year-old former Darlington, Chester, Brighton and Scunthorpe defender joined the backroom staff at Scunthorpe United alongside Adkins following his retirement as a player.
He would follow Adkins to Southampton, Reading, Sheffield United and Hull City and also worked as caretaker manager for the Northern Ireland Under 21 side.
