The motorsports community is mourning the loss of Alva Bienville “Benny” Chastain Jr., a dedicated driver in the ARCA Menards Series, who passed away on February 9, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on September 22, 1942, in Jackson, Alabama, Chastain’s late-blooming racing career and unwavering passion left an indelible mark on the sport.

Unlike many of his peers, Chastain embarked on his racing journey later in life. At 55, he began competing at local dirt tracks in 1997, quickly showcasing his talent and determination. His perseverance led to his ARCA Menards Series debut in 2004 at South Boston Speedway, where he secured a 22nd-place finish. Over the next 15 years, Chastain participated in 50 ARCA races, with his best season standings being 23rd in both 2005 and 2006. Notably, he led a lap at Talladega Superspeedway in 2017 and achieved his career-best finish of 15th at Daytona International Speedway in 2020.

News of Chastain’s passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow racers. Jared Haas, a motorsports journalist, shared the news on social media, leading to heartfelt messages honoring Chastain’s contributions to racing. Many remembered him not only for his on-track performances but also for his warm presence in the ARCA garage.

Personal Life and Legacy

Off the track, Chastain was a family man. He is survived by his children, Melissa Prescott (Chris), Benny Chastain (Christa), and Patrick Chastain, as well as his grandchildren, Jesse and others. His dedication to racing, even when starting at an age when many consider retirement, serves as an inspiration, exemplifying that passion and determination know no age limits.

As the racing world bids farewell to Benny Chastain, his legacy as a tenacious competitor and beloved figure in the ARCA community will be cherished for years to come.
